Programming is definitely a field where the employer wants to know that you know your stuff. If you go into a job interview or application with more experience than the competition along with the right attitude, you can feel confident that you will get the job over them. It all begins with taking the right classes so you have the right things to put down on an application.
Here are some classes that you want to look for to help you secure the programming job that you seek:
• Databases- try to take at least one semester class in relational databases. Nearly any programming job you could take today would require at least some work in these popular databases so it pays to study up and know your stuff. This is a basic staple that will look great on a job app as well.
• Visual Basic- this is the most widely used language in computer programming and you’re going to want to be sure you know what you’re doing. It’s also an easy language to learn so it’s a great basic course to start with and a good basic to have on your resume.
• Java- this is another class that not all colleges have yet but more and more are working into their schedules. Try to get in at least one basic Java course if you can. It will be well to your advantage to add this to a resume or job application.
• C++-one of the more in demand languages of today. It’s a little more difficult to learn but well worth the time invested. Get yourself in a C++ class if you have not already.
• Visual C++- this top development tool does not have many classes yet but if you can find a course to get into, it’s well worth the time and effort. VC++ is growing in popularity and soon will become a common choice in the industry. This does require a good understanding of C++ first.
With these classes you will be ahead of the class when it comes to the programming job that you want. It makes all the difference when you take the extra time to pick the right classes and be sure you are fully prepared for your job of choice.
